On Expectations

People may expect something from us.
To behave in a certain way,
To speak in a certain way,
They want us to live a certain way.
But sometimes, these are contrary to our desires.
The struggle of ‘I don’t want to live that way’ is sometimes noisy.
Loud voices,
Assertive promises,
Harsh outbursts.
But after the fight,
With your own body now,
In its own silence.
Not shouting.
You stand there.
And you realise:
Your own life has begun.
